Mandated by Massachusetts General Law Chapter 115, the Veteran’s Services act as an advocate for the City’s veterans, providing them with support services and emergency financial assistance as needed made possible through Federal Veterans Benefits.

The Department administers a benefits program in which City tax exemptions and abatements earmarked for veterans or their spouses are secured, producing monetary aid to qualified veterans and/or their dependents. In addition, Veterans are eligible for support in the form of housing, living expenses, insurance, and transportation. The City’s veterans may also receive medical and dental benefits through a State reimbursement program in which the City is paid $.75 for every dollar spent. Under the category of Federal aid, veterans are assisted in processing applications for benefits including service-related compensation, disability pensions, personal aid pensions, social security benefits, medical, education, housing, employment, life insurance and death benefits. Finally, the Veterans Department works with the Mayor’s Office and the Somerville Allied Council to coordinate public events on Veterans Day, Memorial Day and Patriots Day.
