The Multicultural Affairs Commission was created by Mayor Curtatone to allow different communities in the city to be heard and consulted, to compile and distribute information regarding interracial and intergroup relationships, and to be a voice for underrepresented people in city government. Although this board is limited to 14 community members, all Somerville residents should feel free to contact the executive director with views, concerns, and questions.

The commission shall work in cooperation with the directors of all departments of the city to improve services. It will strive to eliminate whatever sources of interracial friction may exist, and attempt to eliminate unequal treatment of minority groups on such important problems as housing, recreation, education, law enforcement, vocational guidance and related matters.

The Multicultural Affairs Commission will also work with the Human Rights Commission to ensure that all Somerville residents’ rights and views are respected and adhered to.  Members are appointed to a 4 year term.
