The Highway Department provides street and sidewalk maintenance services to the residents of Somerville and the general public so that streets and sidewalks are clean, safe and in satisfactory condition.

  • Provide curb cuts to residents in a timely and professional manner to allow off street parking.
  • Respond to resident’s requests for trimming, removal and general maintenance of public shade trees for public safety and tree preservation.
  • Provide repairs to potholes in a timely and professional manner to provide safer streets.
  • Provide snow plowing, sanding and removal for safe passage for emergency vehicles and the general public.
  • Provide scheduled street sweeping services to remove debris and keep catch basins clear for public safety.
  • Respond to resident requests to repair uplifted and damaged sidewalks for the safety of the general public.
  • Respond to Residents, Aldermen and Business owner’s requests to remove graffiti in order to provide a safe and clean City.
  • Maintain a daily schedule for citywide trash receptacle pickup in order to provide a clean and safe City.
  • Respond to requests to remove dead animals from the streets of Somerville to ensure the health and safety of the general public.
  • Repair excavations made by the City’s Water Department to restore sidewalks and streets to their original condition for the safety of the general public.
  • Pick up all Christmas trees left by residents on the sidewalks to provide a safe and clean environment.
  • Provide after hour’s response to calls from the general public, fire & police for various activities to provide a safe and healthy environment.
  • Maintain small hand equipment in order to support DPW operations.
  • Respond to Aldermen requests in the form of a Board Order.
