Edgerly Building Area Safety, Traffic & Parking Update for Abutters/Area Residents
This is an important update regarding safety, traffic, and parking in your neighborhood, and a reminder to drivers to use caution near the Winter Hill @ Edgerly Building and East Somerville Community School (ESCS). Starting tomorrow, Wednesday, August 30, the Edgerly Building--bordered by Bonair, Otis, and Cross Streets--will now serve as the school building for the Winter Hill school. Students in grades 1-8 will attend school at the Edgerly Building for the 2023-2024 school year.
Drivers Urged to Exercise Extra Caution in Expanded School Zone
- More students will now be walking, biking, and riding in vehicles to school at the Edgerly in addition to the students attending ESCS, and all drivers are urged to use extra caution in the expanded school zone going forward.
- Please remember that Otis, Bonair, and the adjacent area of Cross Street are all Safety Zone streets with a 20-mph speed limit.
- Traffic calming measures are in place, and drivers can help promote safety as well by slowing down, following all traffic rules, and remaining fully alert when driving near the schools.
Traffic Updates and Reminders
- Neighborhood residents may experience an increase in traffic especially during morning drop-off (about 7:20 to 8:30 a.m.) and afternoon pickup hours (about 2:30 to 3 p.m.).
- Please note that right turns are prohibited from McGrath Highway onto Bonair Street between 7 and 9 a.m. and 2 and 6 p.m. on weekdays, except for school staff and abutters.
- The City is deploying police traffic details in the initial weeks to aid in managing traffic and supporting safety.
Parking Updates and Reminders
- Parking in certain spaces next to the Edgerly on Bonair, Otis, and Cross Streets is now restricted during designated times to student pickup and drop-off only. This is designed to increase student safety and reduce overall parking impacts.
- To avoid being ticketed, please observe all posted parking signs noting the new restrictions.
- Parking Control Officers have been distributing flyers on vehicles with this notice.
