FIREWORKS, FAMILY FUN DAY KICK OFF 'SUMMERTIME IN SOMERVILLE'
Independence Day Celebrations Begin Series of Summer Events With June 28th Fireworks Display and June 30th Family Fun Day at Trum Field
Mayor Joseph A Curtatone announced today that, for the fourth consecutive year, the city will usher in the summer season with two Independence Day events. Celebrations begin on Thursday, June 28th with a fireworks display and patriotic performances, and continue on Saturday, June 30th with the popular Family Fun Day, all at Trum Field on Broadway near Ball and Magoun Squares.
"Our Independence Day events get bigger and better every year, and I know the fireworks display is a special favorite event for many residents," Mayor Curtatone said. "Somerville's patriotic celebrations are always a great success, with this year's biggest and best-ever Memorial Day Parade setting a high standard - but I'm looking forward to continuing the tradition with a truly spectacular Independence Day extravaganza."
Thursday's celebrations are set to begin at 6:30 p.m. with musical entertainment by BOVA Productions, the Sunsetters, and the USO Metropolitan New York Performers. As a grand finale to the evening's performances, fireworks are scheduled to begin at approximately 9:15 p.m. A rain date has been scheduled for Saturday, July 7th.
"Without the generous support of our many local sponsors, especially NSTAR, we would not be able to hold community events on this scale, and I want to thank all of the participating sponsors for their generosity and community spirit," Curtatone said.
"Supporting wonderful community events like Somerville's fireworks display is one of the great traditions we are proud to honor at NSTAR," said Bill Zamparelli, NSTAR Community Relations Representative. "We're excited to once again be a part of this year's celebration, and eager to see yet another terrific display as a kickoff to the summer's events."
The celebration will continue on Saturday, June 30th with Family Fun Day. Scheduled to run from 12:00 noon to 5:00 p.m., the day's family-oriented activities include face painting, softball games, barbecue, a DJ to provide music, and for younger patrons, a moonwalk, obstacle course and giant slide. (A rain date for Family Fun Day has been scheduled for Sunday, July 8th.)
"These family-centered events are always a great way to start off the summer, and we're never disappointed by the wonderful community turnout," said Ward 5 Alderman Sean O'Donovan. "This is one of the great events of the year, and I look forward to another outstanding crowd for a weekend of great entertainment, great friends, and great fun."
In order to ensure public safety and access to all events, Mayor Curtatone also announced that several road closures, parking bans and bus schedule changes would be in effect for both events. "We ask for your patience and understanding with respect to these parking restrictions, as our ultimate goal is public safety during all city events," Curtatone said. The city has provided the following list of event-related traffic and parking alterations:
