Somerville’s Union Square Weekly Farmers' Market
Somerville, MA - June 9, 2005 – The City of Somerville, The Federation of Massachusetts Farmers’ Markets and Union Square Main Streets announce a new farmers’ market showcasing Massachusetts grown produce, greens, fruits and berries, seedlings, herbs, fresh cut flowers and baked goods. The Union Square Market will be open Saturdays from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m., June 11 through October 15. On several Saturdays throughout the season, local artists will sell handcrafted jewelry, sculptures, paintings and other original works of art along side the farmers, creating a truly eclectic market experience. The market will be held on Union Square’s central plaza, where Washington, Prospect and Somerville Avenue meet.
Union Square Market Artists
The Union Square Craft Market joins the Farmers Market on June 25 and will run on alternating Saturdays through September 10. The juried vendors will sell a variety of work include cards, photography, pottery, jewelry and painting.
ArtsUnion
The Union Square Crafts Market and the Opening Day Family Festival is presented by ArtsUnion, an initiative designed to boost the cultural and economic development of Union Square, Somerville by building Union Square as a buzzing cultural destination. Through generous funding from the Massachusetts Cultural Council and its John and Abigail Adams Arts Program, led by The Somerville Arts Council and the Mayor’s Office of Strategic Planning and Community Development and a broad partnership of community groups ArtsUnion cultivates and promotes the square’s diverse artist and business community.
During the summer of 2005 ArtsUnion will present a series of cultural events and performances in the neighborhood including a blues music event, “History of Hip Hop” party, and a festival celebrating Union Square’s rich history of transportation called “Transportation X-Roads.”
Healthy Eating By Design
To make the Union Square Farmers Market and nutritious food accessible to all, a grant supported initiative will provide hands-on nutrition education programs and special events. Tailored for low-income and recent immigrants the program includes cooking demonstrations, nutrition trainings and children-focused educational activities. In addition, the grant makes it possible for customers to purchase goods at the Farmers Market using food stamps/EBT cards, making the Union Square Market fully accessible to area residents from all socio-economic backgrounds. The City of Somerville is one of eight communities in the nation to receive this grant.

Getting Here: Union Square in where Somerville Avenue, Washington Street and Prospect Street meet. Just a half-mile from Inman Square and 2 miles from Harvard, Davis and Sullivan Squares. Come any way you wish!
Driving & Parking: Parking is available in a three nearby lots: on Washington Street behind Ricky’s Flower Market, at the corner of Prospect and Somerville Avenue and beside the Old Firehouse/SCAT in the center of Union Square. There is also on-street parking.
Public Transportation:Red Line MBTA: to Harvard Square, then the #86 (Sullivan Square) bus to Union Square. Or Davis Square, then the #87 (Lechmere) bus to Union Square. Orange Line MBTA: to Sullivan Square, then the #86 (Allston) bus or the #91 (Central Square) bus to Union Square. Green Line MBTA: to Lechmere Station, then the #87 (Clarendon Hill) bus to Union Square.
