Magoun Square

Magoun Square is located at Broadway, Medford Street, and Dexter Street, east of Ball Square and west of Winter Hill. The square has a crash rate nearly two times the regional average, thus it has been identified as a high hazard location. The City is planning a large-scale renovation of the square. The design is 75% complete and currently being reviewed by the Mass Highway Department. It will go to 100% design in early 2009.

The scope of work for this project has two goals. The first aims to make the intersection safer for all modes of travel. Such changes include safer pedestrian crossings, improved lane markings, new signalization, pedestrian actuated push buttons and countdown pedestrian heads, new street lights, and an emergency vehicle pre-emption system. The second goal is to bring the square into compliance with state and federal accessibility requirements. These plans involve streetscape improvements, including ADA accessible ramps, bicycle racks, sidewalk improvements, trees, and trash receptacles.

The renovation of Magoun Square, with a budget of $3,100,000, was initially on the state's Transportation improvement Program (TIP) for the year 2012, however, the MPO recently allocated American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 funds to the project which will allow construction to begin in Spring 2010 and will continue through the Summer 2010..
