Household Hazardous Waste Disposal Options
Motor Oil: Return used oil for recycling to the store from which it was purchased. Retailers are required to accept used oil for recycling (up to 2 gallons per person per day) if it is accompanied by a receipt. (Call the Used Oil Hotline at (617) 556-1022 to report retailers who are unwilling to accept used oil from customers with proof of purchase.)
Photo Chemicals: Photographic waste liquids should not be poured down the drain if the drain is connected to the septic system. In sewered areas, developer and rinse solutions may be poured down the drain. bearing fixer waste for recycling and management.
Surplus Paint: (I) If the paint is usable and there is a reasonable quantity, try to donate it to a community service organization or theatre group. (II) Latex paint can be disposed of as trash if dry. (To dry a small amount of paint, remove the lid and let paint dry in the can. For larger amounts, mix in kitty litter or pour one-inch layers in a cardboard box lined with a plastic bag. Stir the paint occasionally to speed drying, place completely dried paint in the trash. (III) Hardened oil-based paint may also be disposed of in the trash.
Household Batteries: Non-rechargeable batteries such as AA, AAA etc. should be disposed as regular trash. Rechargeable batteries should be saved for household hazardous waste events.
CFL Light bulbs: Compact fluorescent light bulbs should not be disposed of as regular trash. They are considered hazardous waste, and should be disposed of as such.
