On January 21 from 11am to 1pm at the Somerville Theatre in Davis Square, the
community will join together for the annual MLK Jr Day Celebration event.
This year’s theme is “Equality through Access”. The
keynote speaker is Lorraine Cordeiro,
Assistant Professor and Family Research Scholar at UMass/Amherst. Soloist
afroD will perform
spoken word, jazz, and trumpet along with children from Elizabeth Peabody House, the Somerville High School’s Dance Group, and
more. Refreshments are provided by the Somerville Public Schools.
This year’s MLK Jr Award for an organization will be presented to the Walnut Street Center and the MLK Jr
Award for an individual will be presented to Ellen Reisner.
The 2013 MLK Jr Day Service
Activities for January 21st are a blood drive on Holland Avenue in Davis Square
outside the Somerville Theatre by the Red Cross from 10am to 2pm and also a non-perishable food and can drive at the
Somerville Theatre from 11am to 2pm. Donations to the Food Pantry can be
any item that will not spoil or need refrigeration including food such as
beans, rice, cans, crackers, cereal, peanut butter, pasta sauce, or
noodles.
