What is ArtFarm?

What is ArtFarm?

ArtFarm is an experiment. ArtFarm is Somerville’s proposal for our next great public space: a self-sustaining art and urban agriculture laboratory designed to foster community engagement and creativity. We are working to turn a former waste transfer station into a thriving open space.

The 2.1 acre site at 10 Poplar St. will serve as a park, urban agriculture site, and arts hub featuring the ArtFarm community center with performance and exhibit spaces. All of these amenities will sit atop important stormwater tank and pump infrastructure that will help alleviate urban flooding. Set in a neighborhood lacking in open space, the project aims to serve both the immediate neighborhood and all city residents in a dynamic and sustainable way.

In discussions since 2015, the ArtFarm was conceived as a unique urban space bringing together residents and visitors. With strong support from community members and the Somerville Arts Council, a commitment was made by Mayor Curtatone’s administration in 2017 to make 10 Poplar Street the ArtFarm’s permanent home. Presently, the site is divided into two distinct sites; one half is being used by the City for construction staging and the other half houses planting beds and a greenhouse in a unique public-private-partnership as well as an arts space programmed by the Somerville Arts Council.
