2023 CPA Projects

In FY23, $2,131,155 was awarded to 10 projects:

  • 6 historic resources, all community projects
  • 4 open space/recreation, including 3 City projects and 1 public/private partnership

The following projects were funded in FY23:

Open Space & Recreation 

  • Somerville Junction Park: $400,000 toward construction of the park expansion, which will combine an existing passive park with an adjacent City-owned lot previously used for parking 
  • Henry Hansen Park: $350,000 to construct park improvements designed with a previous CPA grant 
  • 217 Somerville Ave: $100,000 for design of a new park on a City-owned vacant parcel near Union Square 
  • Blessing of the Bay Path:  $250,000 for design of a new linear multi-use path by Mystic River Watershed Association in partnership with the City of Somerville on land which the City owns

Historic Preservation 

  • Elizabeth Peabody House: $300,000 for restoration of windows throughout the building at 277 Broadway
  • Mudflat Studio: $15,000 for engineering plan to preserve original features of the building’s facade 
  • Somerville Museum: $151,000 to preserve artifacts in the Museum’s collection as they are returned from off-site storage
  • Broadway Winter Hill Congregational Church:  $80,000 increase in budget for previously-funded bell tower restoration project at 404 Broadway
  • Broadway House:  $60,155 increase in budget for previously-funded project to restore exterior envelope of 181 Broadway, an affordable home owned by Cascap.

In addition to the above, the CPC transferred $1.6 million to the Somerville Affordable Housing Trust (SAHT) to support affordable housing projects. The SAHT will solicit proposals and award funding for projects to create affordable housing units and assist low-income Somerville households to access housing they can afford. Programs & Initiatives

Members will develop a recommendation to the Mayor on both the location and scope of a renovated or new school to meet the needs of the Winter Hill Community Innovation School and potentially the Benjamin G. Brown School.
