The Mayor's Urban Agriculture Initiative grew out of the City's effort to further encourage the growing of healthy, local foods. The initiative includes a series of educational events called "Let's Grow Somerville", the raising of the first City farm at South Street, and the City Hall Demonstration Garden. In addition, the Board of Alderman and the Board of Health (BOH) have passed the first Urban Agriculture Ordinance in Massachusetts. The document found here, "Somerville ABC's of Urban Agriculture," explains the ordinance and the BOH Rules, connects people to existing community resources and highlights some of the best emerging practices in the fields of urban Agriculture, Beekeeping and Chicken keeping. The ABC guide also contains the necessary forms for the keeping of bees and chickens.
