GRAND OPENING OF WEST NEIGHBORHOOD POLICE SUBSTATION WILL BE HELD TUESDAY, JANUARY 6th

Community Members Invited to Meet Neighborhood Officers, Captains

SOMERVILLE – Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone and Chief of Police Anthony Holloway announced that the West Somerville Neighborhood Substation, located at 1154 Broadway, will officially open on Tuesday, January 6th with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and open house, beginning at 6:00 p.m.  All residents and community members are invited to attend and meet their Neighborhood Police Officers and Substation Commander, Captain John O’Connor.  A short reception will follow the event.

“This grand opening marks one of the final chapters in the implementation of Chief Holloway’s reorganization plan for the Police Department, and an important step forward in our continuing efforts to ensure the safety and well-being of the entire Somerville community,” Mayor Curtatone said.  “The East Neighborhood Substation, which opened its doors in October of 2008, has already proven to be a an important resource for both the East Somerville neighborhood and for the Somerville Police Department, and the addition of another substation will further reinforce our efforts to create positive, lasting relationships with the city’s residents, and increase our officers’ presence throughout the city.”

“In the last several months, since reinstituting neighborhood police officers, and with the opening of the East Substation in October, we have received extremely positive feedback from the Somerville community,” Chief Holloway said.  “Our goal of forming positive relationships with community members will be further benefited by the addition of a second substation in West Somerville, and I am very excited to introduce this outstanding team of officers to the neighborhood next week.”

The Grand Opening will begin at 6:00 p.m. at the substation in Teele Square, and will include a ribbon cutting and short speaking program.  Following the ribbon cutting, all attendees are invited to attend a reception with light refreshments and to tour the West Somerville Neighborhood Substation and meet with community officers.  The substation will be staffed by Captain John O’Connor (Commander) and Michael Etchu of the Somerville Police Department.  The substation will be open to the public Monday – Friday, 8:30am – 4:30pm, and will be available as a community meeting space for all residents at arranged times.

“I am very excited to see this important new addition finally come to fruition in our neighborhood,” said Ward 7 Alderman Bob Trane.  “The Police Department’s reorganization has already proven very effective in the entire community, and I am happy to have one of the two new substations in my own ward.  I know that Ward 7 residents will join me in my excitement, and work with the neighborhood officers and Commander of the substation to continue to make Somerville a great place to live, work and play.”
