SOMERVILLE, NORDESTE FINALIZE SISTER CITY AGREEMENT
SOMERVILLE - Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone stands with Principal Officer to the U.S. Consulate in Portugal, Gavin Sundwall (left) and Mayor of the Community of Nordeste, Jose Carlos Carreiro (right) during a trip to the Island of Sao Miguel, in the Azores, last week. Mayor Curtatone visited Nordeste to finalize the Sister City agreement between Somerville and Nordeste, making it the third such agreement for the City of Somerville, along with Gaeta, Italy and Yucuaiquin, El Salvador.
"The City of Somerville is home to many immigrants of Portugal, particularly Sao Miguel, and it was wonderful to have the opportunity to finally visit and learn about the community of Nordeste," Mayor Curtatone said. "The Sister Cities program fosters tremendous cultural and educational experiences among communities across the world, and in Somerville we are lucky to have formalized three relationships that have allowed us to learn and grow as a City. I look forward to hosting Mayor Jose Carlos and members of the Nordeste community during the next phase of our relationship."
Mayor Curtatone traveled with several Somerville residents from July 16th through July 20th, during which time the Mayors of both communities signed a Memorandum of Understanding to solidify the Sister Cities agreement. The Agreement and supporting documents will be on display at City Hall.
