Somerville Styrofoam Recycling Event Returns May 13, at DPW

The City of Somerville’s Styrofoam Recycling program will return for all Somerville residents on Saturday, May 13, 2017. Residents may visit the Department of Public Works yard, located at 1 Franey Rd., between 9 a.m. and noon to dispose of all types of EPS (Styrofoam) foam packing materials, including foam bracing and packing peanuts. IMPORTANT NOTE: materials must be placed in bags before placing it in the recycling container. A second Styrofoam recycling event is tentatively planned for September 2017, however, please call 311 for additional information in the fall.

Somerville Ave Utility and Streetscape Project Informational Meeting 5/18

Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone, Ward 2 Alderman Maryann Heuston and Ward 3 Alderman Robert McWatters invite you to an important informational meeting on the upcoming Somerville Avenue Utility and Streetscape Improvements Project. The project will address flooding issues in Union Square and includes significant streetscape improvements including enhanced pedestrian, transit, bicycle, and traffic facilities, as called for the community-driven Union Square Neighborhood Plan. The meeting will be held Thursday, May 18, at 6:30 p.m. at the Argenziano School Cafeteria at 290 Washington St.

SOMERVILLE – In honor of Somerville’s veterans and all those who have served our nation, the City of Somerville announces a full week of Memorial/Armed Forces Week celebrations, beginning on Saturday, May 20, 2017. The 2017 ceremonies also coincide with the City’s 175th Anniversary of its separation from Charlestown, and the annual Veterans’ Memorial Parade will also honor and celebrate Somerville’s history, dating back to the Revolutionary War era.

Calling all Somerville youth! The Somerville Sunsetters, a singing and dancing youth group that performs throughout Somerville in July and August, are holding annual auditions for Somerville youth between the ages of 11 and 18, on Thursday, May 11, from 4 to 7 p.m.

Commission for Women Hosting Film Screening, Discussion about Gender Equality on May 10

The Somerville Commission for Women will join thousands of other groups around the world to host a screening of 50/50: Rethinking the Past, Present, and Future of Women + Power on Wed., May 10. The 20-minute film is meant to spark a discussion among attendees about issues of gender equality and how our community can work toward gender parity. Somerville’s event will be one of over 8,000 events taking place in 42 states and 36 countries on the same day.

The event begins at 6 p.m. in the Public Safety Building, 220 Washington St. This event is free and open to all.

Please join the Mayor’s Office of Strategic Planning and Community Development, and Ward 4 Alderman Tony Lafuente, for the fourth in a series of community meetings to discuss upcoming renovations to the Winter Hill School Yard, on Wednesday, April 26, beginning at 6 p.m. The meeting will be held in the Winter Hill Community Innovation School cafeteria, entrance on the Medford St. side. Applications for Mayor’s Summer Jobs Program Now Available

SOMERVILLE – Attention Somerville Youth! The Mayor’s Summer Jobs Program is now accepting applications for summer 2017, and more than 100 Somerville teens will be selected to participate in the annual job program which pairs young job seekers with opportunities within City departments as well as with private business partners in Somerville. Applications are available through Friday, April 21, at 12:30 p.m., and can be picked up at the Personnel Department in City Hall, 93 Highland Ave. Applications are also available online at somervillema.gov/summerjobs.
