Fire Department Announces Hydrant Flushing

Residents, Businesses May Experience Brief Period of Discolored Water

SOMERVILLE – The Somerville Fire Department today announced that the annual inspection of all fire hydrants in the city will begin Monday, October 20th and conclude Saturday, November 1st.  During this two-week period all hydrants in the city will be tested.  This procedure requires the flushing of water from hydrants as well as a check of the mechanical operation of the hydrants.

“The annual inspection of our fire hydrants throughout the city is necessary to insuring their proper operation during an emergency situation,” said Fire Chief Kevin Kelleher.

During the inspection, some sediment may be disturbed in the water mains, causing rusty water at the taps in homes and business establishments.  This rusty water condition is temporary and will clear in a matter of a few hours.  Although the water may appear dirty or discolored, it does not pose a health risk to city residents.

Until the water runs clear, it is advisable to avoid washing clothes, especially white fabrics. If any rust stains appear on wet laundry, the clothes should not be dried, and the homeowner should contact the Water Department for a bottle of rust remover at 617-625-6600, ext. 5850.

The inspections will be conducted Monday through Saturday from 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. and in the evening, if needed, from 6:15 p.m. until 8:15 p.m.

Anyone with questions regarding this procedure should call 311 during normal business hours, or contact the Somerville Fire Department directly at (617) 623-1700.
