6th ANNUAL ‘NATIONAL NIGHT OUT’ AGAINST CRIME AND DRUGS SET FOR AUGUST 4th
Event at Foss Park to Include Live Youth Performances, Police and Fire Department Demonstrations, and Music
SOMERVILLE - Mayor Joseph Curtatone and Somerville Cares About Prevention (SCAP) Director Cory Mashburn announced today that, for the sixth consecutive year, SCAP will partner with the City of Somerville and the Somerville Police Department to host the local celebration of the National Night Out Against Crime and Drugs. The event is scheduled for Tuesday, August 4th at Foss Park and will include an obstacle course, Police and Fire Department displays, music, and live dance performances. The evening will conclude with a performance by the Somerville Sunsetters.
"This is a great community event where families come together publicly to promote anti-drug and anti-alcohol awareness, and to reaffirm that the City of Somerville is a strong partner in the National Night Out program and its goals," Mayor Curtatone said. "We also want to get the message out that there are many ways for residents to play an active role throughout the year in improving the health and safety in their neighborhoods, and our NNO event gets bigger and better every year."
National Night Out activities begin at Foss Park at 5 p.m., with youth activity tables and an obstacle course sponsored by the Somerville Recreation Department. Additional activities such as face painting and bike rides will be offered by community partners throughout the evening. Additionally, the Somerville Police Department will be on site with Child ID kits to engage youth and families, and, at 6:30 p.m., the State Police K-9 Unit will conduct a presentation followed by the Somerville Sunsetters at 7:30 p.m.
"The generous support of our many local partners, especially the City of Somerville, Target, Inc., Somerville Recreation Department, the Somerville Police Department, the Somerville Fire Department, and the Somerville Health Department, allow SCAP to organize community-building events like National Night Out," said Mashburn, "We're extremely grateful to these groups and all our local partners and sponsors for their generosity and commitment to Somerville residents."
