Crime Analyst
The City of Somerville seeks a Crime Analyst to perform tactical, strategic and administrative analysis under the direction of the Senior Crime Analyst.
Responsibilities Include:
- General responsibilities include analyzing and disseminating criminal intelligence, detecting crime trends and series, identifying suspect/crime relationships and research projects on criminal and non-criminal public safety issues.
- Specific responsibilities include ongoing analyses of crime trends and issues, disseminating information through regular or requested products, supporting CompStat and criminal intelligence meetings by analyzing data and preparing slides, assisting the Criminal Investigations Division with ongoing cases, managing established crime analysis databases and responding to requests for data by officers, Command Staff, City officials and the public.
- The Crime Analyst makes frequent use of records-management, data management, presentation and mapping software to conduct and present analysis.
Education and Experience: A Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, social science, statistics, or a related field and prior experience in a Crime Analysis Unit or law enforcement setting.
Knowledge: Statistical analysis, computer software knowledge
Abilities: Report writing; presentation abilities
Skill: CAD/RMS systems (QED;IMC). Data management software (Access). GIS (ArcGIS) skills preferred.
Work Environment: The work environment involves everyday discomforts typical of offices, with occasional exposure to outside elements. Noise or physical surroundings may be distracting, but conditions are generally not unpleasant. Employee may be required to monitor work email beyond normal business hours to re-circulate time sensitive material and to work beyond normal business hours to attend evening meetings or complete work assignments.

Physical Skills: Few physical demands are required to perform the work. Work effort principally involves sitting to perform work tasks, with intermittent periods of stooping, walking, and standing. May also be some occasional lifting of objects such as office equipment and computer paper (up to 30lbs.)
Motor Skills: Duties are largely mental rather than physical, but the job may occasionally require minimal motor skills for activities such as moving objects, operating a telephone, personal computer and/or most other office equipment including word processing, filing and sorting of papers.
Visual Skills: Visual demands require constantly reading documents for general understanding and analytical purposes.
