Statement of Duties

To provide on-call delivery service for the Somerville Public Library. This includes operating one’s own vehicle to transport library materials to various locations and to transport library materials and supplies between library branches. Other duties may be assigned. This may turn in to a permanent position.

Essential Functions:

  • Possession of a Massachusetts driver's license and automobile insurance
  • Driving record free of moving violations for the past three years.
  • Work independently.
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, co-workers and the general public.

Requirements:

Education and Experience:

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Possession of a clear driving record, with no accidents or violations in the last three years.
  • Knowledge of laws governing the operation of motor vehicles on public roads.
  • Knowledge of safe driving practices.

Knowledge, Abilities and Skill

Knowledge:

  • Principles of safe and lawful motor vehicle operation.
  • Traffic laws and regulations.

Abilities:

  • Anticipate the behavior, actions and reactions of other motorists and respond appropriately.
  • Use interpersonal skills, common courtesy and tact when dealing with staff members and patrons.
  • Work unsupervised, exercise self-discipline and to take responsibility for persona lactions.
  • Work accurately and efficiently.
  • Manage time to maximize productivity.
  • Handle the physical aspects of the job such as sorting materials and loading and unloading trucks.
  • Remain calm and poised in all driving situations.

Skill:

  • Maneuvering assigned vehicle safely and efficiently in a variety of traffic and weather conditions.

Work Environment

Work is performed both in and out of doors and sometimes is performed under adverse weather conditions.

Physical and Mental Requirements

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the position’s essential functions.

Physical Skills
Ability to frequently bend and stoop, and to occasionally squat, crouch and kneel.

As well as the ability to frequently sort, lift and carry equipment and supplies, such as boxes of books weighing up to a total of 50 pounds; and to occasionally lift and carry supplies and equipment weighing up to 100 pounds.

Motor Skills
Duties are largely physical in nature, requiring lifting multiple bags of library materials weighing upwards of 40-50 pounds per bag, and operating a motor vehicle.

Visual Skills
Visual demands require the ability to operate a motor vehicle.

Hours:
Up to 15 hours per week. Approximately 2pm-5pm Monday through Friday or as assigned
Salary:
$12.31 per hour
