Join us at the last SomerStreets festival of the year, the spooky and fun “Monster Mashed-up” on Sunday, October 20, from 2 to 6 p.m. (rain date Oct 27) on Somerville Ave. between Union Square and Park St. SomerStreets is the City of Somerville’s take on the internationally-renowned Open Streets concept, closing busy city streets to vehicles, and opening them up for cycling, walking, dancing, running, and other modes of activity. Through SomerStreets, the City and its community partners aim to promote and encourage easy access to physical activity, fresh foods, and reconnecting with neighborhoods and businesses and their unique cultural elements in a thriving urban environment.

Activities along Somerville Ave. will include:

  • Live music on two stages:
    • Church Street stage (389 Somerville Ave.) featuring:
      • 2 p.m. Beacon for Spirits
      • 3:15 p.m. School of HONK
      • 4 p.m. Squirrel Flower
      • 5 p.m. Sweater Mouth
    • Mass Ave. Music Stage (487 Somerville Ave) featuring:
      • 4 p.m. The Handymen
      • 5 p.m. We Can’t Work It Out (Beatles tribute)
  • Costume parade led by School of HONK! Kicking-off at the corner of Park St. at 3 p.m. – wear a costume! Open to all humans and pets!
  • Doggy costume contest with prizes – hosted by Elliot House
  • Giant chainsaw pumpkin carving with Artisan's Asylum
  • Vintage and artisan market curated by the Somerville Flea
  • Parkour with Parkour Generations Boston
  • Learn to walk on stilts with Open Air Circus
  • Mini pumpkin decorating and sports activities with Somerville Recreation
  • Storytime with the Somerville Public Library
  • Somerville Media Center pop-up and Community Media Week kick-off
  • Rock climbing wall & bouncy house
  • Games with BuzzRoar Interactive – for people of all ages!
  • Literary workshop
  • Martial arts demonstration
  • Explore a fire truck and ambulance
  • Community vendors an local businesses
  • Haunted House at Parts & Crafts 2 to 4 p.m. (577 Somerville Ave.)
  • And more!

Additionally, join the Somerville Historic Preservation Commission, Historic Somerville, and the Somerville Museum for the “Ghosts of Milk Row Cemetery” tours, which will be offered from 2 to 4 p.m. at the historic Milk Row Cemetery at 400 Somerville Ave. Visit the City’s 19th century burial grounds and take a guided tour of the gravesites. At each site a “ghost” will engage in conversation about his or her life in Somerville in centuries past. For the tour, there is a suggested donation of $5.

To ensure public safety at this SomerStreets event, the following road closures and parking bans will be in effect.

  • Somerville Ave. (Hawkins St. to Park St.): Closed to all vehicular traffic 12 p.m. - 8 p.m.; no parking 8 a.m. - 6 p.m.
  • Laurel St., School St., Quincy St., Church St., and Putnam St. will become two way streets between Summer St. and Somerville Ave. 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. to allow access for abutters. Bow St. will also be two way for abutters.
  • MBTA bus 87 will be rerouted from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. For locations of rerouted bus stops, visit
