Somerville Offers Free Taxi Rides to Local Food and Health Services

Somerville residents can once again sign up for free cab rides to access food and medical care through its Taxi to Health program. After establishing the program in 2020 as a crisis measure during the early days of the pandemic, the City of Somerville is relaunching the initiative using American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds.

DA Update on Somerville Police Officer

As reported by the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office, on May 5, 2022, former Somerville Police Officer Michael McGrath admitted to sufficient facts in Cambridge District Court to the charge of assault and battery by means of a dangerous weapon.   

Somerville Police Update: Shots Fired - Mystic Ave.

On Sunday, May 1, at approximately 10:15 p.m., Somerville-911 Communications Center received multiple calls for shots fired in the area of 480 Mystic Avenue. Upon arrival, Officers discovered ten 9mm casings in the parking lot at Central Convenience, located at 460 Mystic Avenue. Officers also discovered ballistic damage to windows at the rear of 7 Memorial Road where bullets entered a window of a bedroom where children were sleeping. There are no known injuries at this time or evidence of injuries.

Yard Waste Pickup Begins April 19

Somerville’s yard waste pickup begins Tuesday, April 19. That week's collection is on a one-day delay due to the Patriots’ Day Holiday on Monday, April 18, so put all trash, recycling, and yard waste out one day later than you normally would. A full yard waste calendar is available at somervillema.gov/yardwaste and will be in the Environmental Service Guide, which will be mailed to all households later this month.

Somerville PD Officer Suffers Non-Life-Threatening Injury Due to Unintentional Discharge of Duty Weapon

A Somerville Police Officer suffered a non-life-threatening injury via an unintentional discharge of the officer’s duty weapon causing injury.     The incident occurred at approximately 4 p.m. on April 6, 2022. The injured officer was transported to an area hospital where the Officer was treated and released. The officer is expected to make a full recovery.  No one else was injured. 

Patriots' Day Colonial Fair, Monday, April 18

On Monday, April 18, for the first time since 2017, the City of Somerville will be celebrating Patriots’ Day outdoors and in person at Foss Park on Broadway from 10 to 11:30 a.m.  This event will feature a reenactment of Paul Revere’s famous ride from Boston to Lexington — which happened to pass right through Somerville!
