This election will narrow the field for Representative in Congress, Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Attorney General, Secretary of State, State Treasurer, State Auditor, Governor's Council, State Senator, State Representative, District Attorney, and Sheriff. Somerville voters can vote early in person or by mail.

Heat Advisory in Effect: Take Steps to Stay Safe and Keep Cool

 UPDATE: The National Weather Service has extended the Heat Advisory through 8 p.m. Tuesday, August 9. The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for the Boston metro area Thursday and Friday, August 4 and 5. Residents are urged to take precautions to stay safe. Review the following heat safety tips and ways to keep cool in Somerville. Most importantly, do not leave children or pets in a vehicle even if the windows are open, drink plenty of fluids, stay out of the sun, and limit your outdoor activity.  

Somerville to Host “The Moving Wall” Vietnam Veterans Memorial, November 10-14

 Somerville has been announced as a host city on this year’s nationwide tour of The Moving Wall, a half-sized replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. The Moving Wall has been traveling to cities and towns across the country for nearly forty years to give those who can’t get to Washington a chance to experience the power of the memorial. This fall, it makes its way to Somerville for the first time, setting up in the Mass General Brigham Great Lawn at Assembly Row (399 Revolution Drive), November 10-14.

Envisioning 90 Washington Street: Design Workshop, August 4

 Mayor Katjana Ballantyne and the City of Somerville invite you to a design workshop for 90 Washington Street, a 4-acre site near the East Somerville Green Line station envisioned as the future home of a new Public Safety Building and a range of civic, commercial, and residential uses. This is the latest engagement event for the 90 Washington Street project, coming after a series of community meetings and listening sessions held earlier this year. At this workshop, participants can use LEGOs to design their ideal redevelopment of the site.

Somerville Hiring Polling Place Workers for 2022 Election Cycle

 The City of Somerville is hiring polling place workers for the upcoming 2022 election cycle. Hundreds of poll workers will be needed this year to conduct a successful election. Interested residents are encouraged to attend an information session on Thursday, July 28, to learn more.  General Duties  Poll workers are encouraged to commit to working both election days: Tuesday, September 6, and Tuesday, November 8. Each workday starts at 6:30 a.m. and ends after the polls close at 8 p.m., with a two-hour break. Poll workers serve in one of the following roles:

Somerville Passes Housing Stability Amendment to Significantly Expand Awareness of Tenant Protections & Resources

 The City of Somerville has passed an amendment to its landmark Housing Stability Notification Act (HSNA) to significantly expand awareness of tenant protections. The amendment requires landlords to provide tenants with information about their rights and resources at the start of all new housing rentals, rather than only when pursuing an eviction, as stipulated in the original legislation. At-Large Councilor Willie Burnley, Jr., originally proposed the amendment.

Help Stop Black Swallow-Wort in Somerville This Summer

 The City of Somerville is partnering with community groups again this year to raise awareness about black swallow-wort (BSW), a very aggressive and invasive, non-native weed that can be found throughout Somerville. BSW displaces native plants and habitats, threatens butterflies and songbirds, and is toxic to deer and livestock. It is especially harmful to the monarch butterfly population because it resembles milkweed, where monarchs lay their eggs, and once the monarch larvae hatch, they die from eating the toxic BSW leaves.
