City of Somerville Seeks Members for Vision Zero Working Group

The City of Somerville is seeking applicants to serve on the newly formed Vision Zero Working Group to help advance the City’s Vision Zero commitment of eliminating vehicle crashes that result in death or serious injury.

Resident members of the Working Group will work with City staff to realize key Vision Zero strategies of prioritizing equity, engagement, and approaching roadway safety with a multi-disciplinary framework. Members of the local and regional advocacy community or anyone committed to safe streets and multimodal transportation are encouraged to apply. Areas of expertise that would be helpful among the membership, but that are not required for membership, include knowledge or expertise in transportation engineering or planning; related legal and policy experience at the local, state, and federal level; emergency response; maintenance of public infrastructure; active transportation; public health; public education; and other related areas.  

The Working Group will hold quarterly meetings to discuss ideas, progress, and challenges related to accomplishing Vision Zero actions.

Community members who would like to apply to be on the Working Group should send a brief statement of interest and information on any relevant qualifications to Alexandra Kleyman, Senior Transportation Planner, at akleyman@somervillema.gov by noon on Friday, May 14. 

In February 2020, the City finalized its Vision Zero Action Plan after receiving input from the public at a series of open houses. Over the past year, the City worked towards several of the actions in the 0 – 2 year timeframe of the plan, and in March of this year, the City published its first Vision Zero Report Card. The report card takes stock of the City’s progress: It presents a transparent summary of the major accomplishments as well as the challenges faced during year 1 of the action plan.
