Join Historic Preservation Commission for Tours of Milk Row Cemetery, Prospect Hill Tower

Wondering about the residents of this historic Milk Row Cemetery dating back to 1804? Join the Somerville Historic Preservation Commission on Sunday, November 6, from 2 to 4 p.m., for the final public opening of 2016. Due to its fragile condition, the site is often closed to the public, except by appointment, or during regular openings during the seasonal months. At those times, volunteer docents, often dressed in historic period clothing, will help you learn a little about the buried residents, from as far back as Revolutionary times, and their history within the community, once known as "Beyond the Neck.” The grounds may also be appreciated as a peaceful retreat for reading and contemplation.

Have you ever wondered about the view from the top of the Prospect Hill Tower? Come and see it for yourself! Thanks to recent renovations through the Community Preservation Act, residents can take docent-guided tours to the top on select dates. Remaining dates for 2016 are:

  • Thursday, November 4, 4 – 5:30 p.m.
  • Saturday, November 12, noon – 2 p.m.

(Inclement weather cancels)

The tower was built in 1903 to honor the troops who camped atop the hill during both the Revolutionary War and Civil War. It was designated as a Local Historic District in 1985 and was just recently re-stabilized through a 2015 Somerville CPA grant.
