2016 CPA Projects

In FY16, $5,630,123 in CPA funds were awarded to 13 projects:

  • 4 affordable housing, 4 historic resources, 5 open space/recreation land
  • 6 are community projects, 4 are City projects, and 3 are joint community/City projects

The following projects were funded in FY16:

Affordable Housing (awarded by Somerville Affordable Housing Trust Fund):

CPA affordable housing projects are awarded and managed by the Trust Fund, as the housing arm of the Community Preservation Committee.

100 Homes Initiative

Somerville Community Corporation

Somerville Community Corporation
($1.2 million awarded in FY16; $1.2 million awarded in FY15)

This initiative seeks to create 100 new units of affordable housing in Somerville through purchasing existing multi-family homes. To date, SCC has acquired 12 units in five properties.

Mystic Water Works

Somerville Housing Authority

Somerville Housing Authority
($507,000 awarded)

The Somerville Housing Authority is creating 25 new units of affordable housing in the historic MWRA pump station. The project received CPA community housing projects from the Trust Fund as well as historic funds to restore the historic windows. This project also received $243,000 in CPA historic resources funds in FY15 for window restoration.

ShortStop Self-Sufficiency Program

Wayside Youth and Family Support Network
($26,107 awarded in FY16; $25,000 awarded in FY17)

ShortStop provides transitional housing for nine homeless young adults for up to one year.

Leasing Differential Program- Better Homes

Somerville Homeless Coalition
($56,868 awarded in FY16; $35,820 awarded in FY15)

The Better Homes program provides rental assistance to 17 disabled and formerly homeless Somerville households.

West Branch Library Rehabilitation

The City of Somerville will restore the existing library interior and exterior and ensure the building is fully accessible.

Milk Row Cemetery

The City of Somerville will rehabilitate and conserve 48 grave markers and the Civil War Monument in the Milk Row Cemetery. Eight brick tombs were restored with FY15 CPA funds.

Local Historic District (LHD) Property Owner Preservation Fund

This project will create a dedicated fund that will provide small grants to owners of local historic district designated properties for the restoration and preservation of their structures.

Somerville Museum

The Somerville Museum's project will make major improvements in the Museum's environment to protect its collections, reinstall the original Palladian window, and make the building accessible.

 

 

 

Open Space & Recreational Land

South Street Farm

Groundwork Somerville
($60,160 awarded)

Groundwork Somerville is expanding the capacity of the South Street Farm to be used as a public space and outdoor classroom. Improvements will include a shade structure, tables and benches, wash station, new rain collection surfaces and storage, and installation of composting structures.

Community Path Repaving

The Community Path will be repaved from the Cambridge line to Cedar Street.

Community Path Design

City of Somerville Parks and Open Space and Friends of the Community Path
($75,000 awarded)

The City of Somerville and the Friends of the Community Path will lead a design process to improve drainage on the Path and explore the addition of new amenities.

Allen Street Mixed Use Renovation

A landscape architect will be hired to develop a schematic design to rebuild the Allen Street Open Space. 
Hoyt Sullivan Playground Renovation

The City of Somerville will renovate the 22,000 square foot Hoyt Sullivan Playground, including improving accessibility.

Programs & Initiatives

If you are a business, consultant, or non-profit that may be able to support Somerville’s business community, we encourage you to respond to our Request for Information (RFI).
Members will develop a recommendation to the Mayor on both the location and scope of a renovated or new school to meet the needs of the Winter Hill Community Innovation School and potentially the Benjamin G. Brown School.
