The Somerville Public Library invites all members of the community to participate in the 2018 Summer Reading Program, running from June 19 to August 15. All three library locations will be offering a variety of programs and prizes around this year’s national Collaborative Summer Reading Program theme, Libraries Rock!™. For the second year in a row, the Somerville Public Library will be offering programs for readers of all ages, including children, teens, and adults.
Registration begins June 19 at all Somerville Public Library locations. Adult participants can also register online at
http://tinyurl.com/splsummer2018. Each library branch will host its own kick-off event for children on the dates and times below:
Tuesday, June 19, 3:00-4:00 PM, (Central Library, 79 Highland Avenue)
Alchemy Laboratory with Ed the Wizard: Real science meets Harry Potter! Learn and perform magical feats such as transfigurations, vanishings, levitation, and other forms of "alchemy magic" using common household items!
Tuesday, June 26, 11:00 AM-12:00 PM, (West Branch Library, 40 College Avenue)
Multilingual Concert with Sulinha: Sing, dance, and drum along at this interactive concert that mixes familiar songs with Brazilian rhythms and melodies!
Wednesday, June 27, 11:00 AM-12:00 PM (East Branch Library, 115 Broadway)
Multilingual Concert with Sulinha: Sing, dance, and drum along at this interactive concert that mixes familiar songs with Brazilian rhythms and melodies!
Upon registration, each child will receive a packet with a reading log and other prizes. Children are encouraged to log their reading and check in weekly at the library throughout the summer to receive prizes. New this year, each child who registers is automatically entered into our Ice Cream Social with the Mayor contest. At the end of the summer, four children and their families will be invited to share ice cream with Mayor Curtatone and the other winners.
Teens may register at any library by writing and submitting a short book review. Each book review will count as an entry into a drawing for the grand prize: an iTunes gift card. Other themed prizes, such as rock candy, will be given to participants throughout the summer.
Adults are also able to join the Summer Reading Challenge by submitting book reviews. Each book review submitted counts as an entry toward the grand prize: two tickets to an American Repertory Theater performance of your choice. Other prizes include a gift card to Porter Square Books and a gift certificate to GROOVES. Entries may be submitted in person at any SPL location or by visiting

The 2018 Summer Reading Program is sponsored in part by JP Licks, the American Repertory Theater, the Friends of the Somerville Public Library, and the Massachusetts Cultural Council.
