IT Network Manager

Duties:

The City of Somerville seeks an IT Network Manager who will be accountable for the overall data and communications services for the City of Somerville; maintain and support communications systems within the organization; identify issues and appropriate courses of action; research and oversee implementation of new technologies. 

Essential Functions:

  • Maintain, manage, monitor and administer the entire network infrastructure on a daily basis including but not limited to all data switches, data jacks, cable runs(plenum and fiber optic), all patch cords and patch panels in every IDF and wiring closet across all 32 city and school buildings in the city of Somerville.
  • Administer, maintain, manage, and monitor the Voice over IP system (VOIP) including but not limited to all cisco handsets and conference phones as well as all voice application servers and software including Unity, Call Manager and IPCC.
  • Oversee and monitor all voice and data circuits’ including PRI’s to ensure the vendors’ adherence to availability and monthly charges are in accordance with all Commonwealth of Mass state blanket contract agreements.
  • Maintain, manage and monitor all network internet connectivity and VPN connections according to department SLA’s and to ensure the vendors’ adherence to availability and monthly charges are in accordance with all Commonwealth of Mass state blanket contract agreements.
  • Ensure the maintenance, management, monitoring and administering of network security policies, security hardware and software including firewalls and any related software applications.
  • Monitor, administer, manage, and control the VMS environment including all related hardware and software.
  • Work with Department Heads to establish needs assessments and cost analysis for network related changes for both immediate needs and those in the upcoming fiscal year.
  • Sustain a professional relationship with vendors in regards to maintenance contracts and the SLA’s associated with each contract.
  • Respond to all service and support Help Desk calls related to the voice and data network systems according to Information Technology SLA’s.
Requirements:

Education and Experience: College Degree and five (5) years experience; or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.

Knowledge of Cisco networking and Call Manager VOIP.

Ability to understand firewalls, active directory, and Exchange. Identifying issues and appropriate courses of action; research and oversee implementation of telecommunication systems; and manage multiple tasks in a detailed and effective manner. 

Skill in installing and managing systems and communicating with a variety of people.

Work Environment
The work environment involves everyday discomforts typical of offices, with occasional exposure to outside elements.  Noise or physical surroundings may be distracting, but conditions are generally not unpleasant.  Employee may be required to work beyond normal business hours in response to attend evening meetings or complete work assignments.

Physical Skills
Few physical demands are required to perform the work. Work effort principally involves sitting to perform work tasks, with intermittent periods of stooping, walking, and standing.  May also be some occasional lifting of objects such as office equipment and computer paper (up to 30 lbs.).  When installing equipment and cable, is required to climb ladders and lift equipment up to approximately 50 lbs.

Motor Skills
Duties are largely mental rather than physical, but the job may occasionally require minimal motor skills for activities such as moving objects, operating a telephone, personal computer and/or most other office equipment including word processing, filing and sorting of papers. When working with equipment, cables and wiring, fine motor skills are required.

Visual Skills
Visual demands require constantly reading documents for general understanding and analytical purposes. The employee must be able to work closely with wiring and cables.

80,684.76 per yr / 1551.63 weekly. Plus Benefits.
