Manager of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion

Duties:

The City of Somerville seeks a Manager of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion who will be responsible for the administrative, community, and programmatic aspects of Human Rights Commission, Commission for Persons with Disability, implementation of Somerville’s ADA transition plan, and support partnerships with other city departments and organizations on issues of equity and inclusion. 

  • Serve as a resource for and provide technical assistance to the City and residents regarding Human Rights, Equity /Inclusion and Accessibility
  • Staff the Human Rights Commission and Commission for Persons with Disabilities
  • Implement the City’s ADA transition plan
  • Present and investigate ADA and Human Rights complaints in a timely manner and provide written reports appropriately when complete
  • Research and assist with programs to enhance ADA, Equity and Inclusion awareness
  • Work with the Human Rights and Commission for Persons with Disabilities to address policies and procedures
  • Maintain current information regarding State, Local & Federal laws and regulations on ADA and Equity/Inclusion
  • Ensure the City’s compliance with ADA regulations
  • Develop written and web-based materials to disseminate information
  • Attend public meetings and events as necessary to represent and promote the City’s interests
  • Develop and maintain partnership with related organization through outreach to foster collaboration on available resources
  • Collaborate with local community, other city departments, and state/federal agencies
  • Prepare staff reports including data and narrative reporting
  • Other duties as assigned

 

Requirements:

Education and Experience: College Degree in a related field and three (3) to five (5) years’ experience; or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.  Master’s degree or legal background preferred. 

Knowledge: Knowledge of laws related to confidentiality, affirmative action, equal opportunity and disability issues.  Knowledge of community, action groups, politics (local), neighborhoods and business concerns. 

Abilities: Ability to organize and direct the preparation of comprehensive reports, analyze problems, ability to understand and interpret laws prepare technical reports and formulate recommendations; ability to communicate effectively in a concise and convincing manner.

Skill: Skill in community involvement in an urban environment; excellent customer service, written and verbal communication, public speaking/presentation development, planning and design skills. Second language skill preferred.

Work Environment
The work environment involves everyday discomforts typical of offices, with occasional exposure to outside elements.  Noise or physical surroundings may be distracting, but conditions are generally not unpleasant.  Employee may be required to work beyond normal business hours in response to attend evening and weekend meetings or complete work assignments.

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the position’s essential functions.

Physical Skills
Few physical demands are required to perform the work. Work effort principally involves sitting to perform work tasks, with intermittent periods of stooping, walking, and standing.  May also be some occasional lifting of objects such as office equipment and computer paper (up to 30lbs.)

Motor Skills
Duties are largely mental rather than physical, but the job may occasionally require minimal motor skills for activities such as moving objects, operating a telephone, personal computer and/or most other office equipment including word processing, filing and sorting of papers.

Visual Skills
Visual demands require constantly reading documents for general understanding and analytical purposes.
