Urban Manufacturing Intern

Duties:

Somerville is a city with a strong and growing manufacturing base with companies producing items from chocolate and beer to 3D printers and the future of clean technology. This local manufacturing plays a strong role not only in the present economic landscape of the city but also provides a foundation for the City’s future and goals for the creation of 30,000 new jobs by the year 2030 as outlined in Somerville’s comprehensive plan “SomerVision.”

In 2017 the City of Somerville’s Economic Development Office is undertaking several projects to support and grow this local manufacturing ecosystem. “FabVille”, constructed in the fall of 2016, is Somerville’s public Fabrication Laboratory and is a facility where all Somerville residents can come to learn and use digital fabrication and rapid prototyping equipment. The City will also be host to several manufacturing conferences in the spring that will highlight the makers, businesses, and community that make Somerville a regional manufacturing hub.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist in organizing and preparing for manufacturing events and conferences in the spring. Events include the Urban Manufacturing Alliance regional conference and the Digital Fabrication Convention. Dates to be determined. Tasks include but are not limited to:
    • Event planning and logistics
    • Outreach through press, social media, email list, and on-line platforms
    • Working closely with event partners
  • Assist in Somerville Fab Lab (“FabVille”) management including:
    • Work with Lab Manager to recruit and vet workshops
    • Assist in marketing FabVille and related events
  • Other responsibilities as needed
Requirements:
  • Candidate must be currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree
  • Interest in Urban Planning, Economics, Public Policy, Public Administration or related field preferred
  • Interest or experience in making and manufacturing preferred
  • Experience with event planning and volunteer management
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
