The purpose of the Health Department is to provide public health services to the City by effectively maintaining health and wellness of citizens through related policymaking, school health programs, vaccine distribution, public health education campaigns, communicable disease investigation, and public health regulation.
The Department regulates smoking in restaurants and bars and monitors the sale of tobacco products to youth. The Department also prepares to respond to Bioterrorism disasters by coordinating with regional and local emergency preparedness efforts, assists in the control of communicable diseases through immunizations, vaccine distribution, and works collaboratively with the Cambridge Health Alliance and Somerville School Department to develop and implement the Youth Risk Behavior Surveys for all 6-12 grade students.
Most recently, the Health Department has taken the lead on addressing alcohol and drug prevention activities in particular to implementing the Mayor's Oxycontin Work Group and Suicide Prevention Work Group. Data from the local youth risk behavior survey show that both drugs and alcohol and risk of suicide ideation are above statewide levels.
