Parking is an important part of living in Somerville. The Parking Department works with other departments in the City to make sure that all public roads are safe and accessible. On this page, you’ll find helpful information about parking tickets, permits, street sweeping, and more.

Our department enforces parking and traffic regulations through road signage, parking meters, and other methods. We help departments like Planning, Public Works, and Police and Fire on all matters related to traffic and parking. Working with the City’s Traffic Commission, we also help create rules and regulations for using the City’s roads.

If you’re new to Somerville, visit our New Residents 101 Guide to find information on getting settled.

Permits: Resident, Visitor, Business, & More

We work carefully to balance parking between visitors, businesses, and residents. To help make sure everyone gets a fair chance at finding a spot, we have an array of parking options and permits. The sections below will help you find the right permit for your needs.

Welcome to Somerville! If you have a car, you’ll need to get a residential parking permit. New residents can get a temporary permit for free, which is valid for up to 30 days. After that, you’ll need to get a residential parking permit, which costs $40. The city is divided into eight zones, and permits are valid for up to one year (depending on the date of the permit purchase and the zone's expiration date).

Vehicles parked in a residential zone without a residential parking permit, temporary parking permit, or a visitor pass will be subject to ticketing. If you have applied AND paid for your residential parking permit but haven’t received the physical permit yet, your vehicle will not be ticketed. You can apply for your permit online, by mail, by dropping off a completed application in the secure dropbox at the Parking Department office (133 Holland Street) or in person during regular business hours. Here’s how to do each:

Apply for Your Permit Online

Follow these steps carefully to apply for your permit online. Permits applied for and paid for online can be issued and mailed in as few as four business days.

  • 1. Pay Any Outstanding Tickets
  • Tickets may be paid online or by calling 844-807-9069.
  • 2. Gather Your Materials
  • You’ll need a copy of your vehicle registration showing that your car is garaged in Somerville. Learn how to amend your registration.
  • You’ll also need proof of residency, like a gas or electric bill. Leases only count as proof for temporary permits. See what qualifies as proof of residency.
  • 3. Submit Your Application

Parking Tickets, Booting, & Towing

Parking ticket illustration

With one car for every 1.6 residents, Somerville has more cars per square mile than both Boston and Cambridge. As the most densely-populated city in New England, we take our parking rules seriously. This section covers what to do if you get a ticket.

Parkmobile does not own, operate, manage or enforce the parking areas. They do not issue tickets and cannot excuse them for you. Instead, please follow the instructions below for appealing a ticket within the City of Somerville. You can log on to your Personal Pages online at parkmobile.io to obtain a receipt for your parking session.

You can appeal a ticket quickly and easily online! Here are a few tips:

  • You can upload up to 3 documents to support your appeal.
  • If you decide you want to pay your ticket online instead, you'll be given a link to do so.
  • If you don't pay or appeal a parking ticket within 21 days...
    • Late fees may be added to the ticket amount.
    • We will schedule an in-person appeal hearing for you automatically.
    • You'll receive a late notice and appeal date in the mail approximately 45 days after the ticket was issued.

Appeal a Ticket Online

Please note: Handwritten tickets issued by Somerville Police may not be available for appeal online or by phone but can always be appealed by mail or in person. Contact 311 with any questions.

You can also appeal your ticket by mail. Send a copy of the ticket (along with a signed operator statement and any supporting documents) to Parking Department, 133 Holland Street, Somerville, MA 02144. A decision will be mailed to you within 4 to 6 weeks.

Online: Before you use the online system to pay your ticket, there are a few things you need to know:

  • You’ll need your ticket or license plate number and a valid credit card to pay online. We accept Mastercard, Visa, and Discover.
  • Don’t include spaces or hyphens when you enter the ticket number. You must include the two-letter prefix before the ticket number (e.g. 'SX' or 'SO') without spaces. Example: 'SX123456789'
  • Include your email address on the form if you want payment confirmation. Or, you can print the confirmation screen by hitting the print button on your browser.
  • If you think the ticket was issued in error, you can appeal your ticket (see the next section), but paying a ticket waives your right to an appeal. Once paid, you cannot request a refund or appeal.
  • If you need additional help, call us at 311 (or 617-666-3311 from outside of Somerville).

  • After payments are processed, you or a designate must go to Parking Department to pick up a vehicle release form.
  • Once you have obtained the vehicle release form, you will need to contact the tow company (781-395-0808) to have an employee meet you at your vehicle to remove the boot. You’ll need to pay a boot removal fee of $132.00 (subject to change) in cash.
  • If you don’t get the boot removed within 48 hours, your vehicle will be towed. The towing fee is $132.00 (subject to change), and the storage fee is $35.00 per day. Both are payable to the tow company.

Parking Meters

Meter Basics

Meters are active Monday through Saturday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Parking is free on Sundays and all holidays. Meters cost $1.25 per hour; at a rate of $0.25 for 12 minutes.

To avoid getting a ticket, make sure you park in a spot that has enough time for however long you plan to stay. Generally, curbside spots in front of stores allow parking for up to two hours. You can identify these spots by looking for the yellow band on the meter post. Off-street lots allow for parking up to three hours. These meters will have an orange band on the meter post.

Remember to be considerate when parking in the City. Please park within the lines and avoid parking in handicapped spots, crosswalks, loading zones, and bus stops. Parking Control Officers and Somerville Police are always on the lookout for people violating the parking regulations.

Parking kiosks replace traditional single-space meters and serve multiple spaces. On the street, one kiosk can serve about 10 spaces. In the parking lots, kiosks can serve the whole lot. Pay digital meters/kiosks with quarters, debit or credit cards (Mastercard, Visa, Discover) or the Parkmobile app (iOS/Android/Windows Phone.). Click here for a guide to paying at a kiosk with a credit card.

Click here to view a map of public, metered parking lots in Davis Square.

Please report vandalized or broken meters to the City. You can report a broken meter by dialing 311 or emailing 311requests@somervillema.gov. Make sure you provide the meter location and ID number.

ParkMobile: Pay By App or Phone Call

Drivers in Somerville can pay for parking at meters/kiosks in the city by using Parkmobile’s smartphone app available for iPhone, Android, and Windows phones, or by calling 877PARK717 (877-727-5717) toll-free from any phone (no smartphone needed).

To use Parkmobile’s mobile payment system, customers download the mobile app in their phone’s app store or register a new account at parkmobile.io associated with a credit card. Once registered, they may use the mobile app, internet, or a toll-free number to pay for parking.

After setting up their account, customers can immediately start using the system with their registered mobile phone. Each City parking meter will have a Parkmobile sticker that includes a number and a QR code. Customers either enter the number into the Parkmobile app or after calling the toll-free number, or scan the QR code with their smartphone, and choose how long they wish to park. A countdown timer in the app will show how much time is remaining on the meter and allow quick and easy extension of parking time.

In addition to the convenience of not needing to carry coins for meters, Parkmobile app users can opt to receive notifications 15 minutes prior to their session expiring, allowing them to add parking time remotely by phone and avoid potential meter violations and fines. Parkmobile’s service may be utilized at all on- and off-street public parking spaces throughout the city.

If you don't have the Parkmobile app, you can still pay by phone at any Parkmobile site by calling this number: (877) 727-5717 (877-PARK-717).

Please note: If you are parking in Somerville, MA you must use only the number listed above. If you are parking in Somerville and call the Parkmobile number for any other city or venue, the parking control officers will not see your parking payment and you may be ticketed or towed.

The credit cards accepted by the pay-by-phone system are Visa, MasterCard, Discover, and American Express. Users who register with Parkmobile online or through the app can also have their parking charges applied to their PayPal account or Parkmobile Wallet.

You can not stop a session once started. You must select the amount of time you want in advance and pay for that time with your credit card. If you chose more time than you needed, you will not be able to stop the session or get a refund.

You are able to extend your parking time, if you see that you need more than the amount you initially paid for, as long as you haven't already chosen the meter maximum. Example: If the meter maximum is 2 hours, and you chose 1 hour, you can then extend your session before it expires for an additional hour. Note that extensions are separate transactions, and therefore each extension carries a transaction fee as well.

There is no cost to register online or through the app, and we urge pay-by-phone customers to do so prior to parking to avoid the $5 fee that may be charged by registering with a support agent by phone.

The transaction fees for this area are as follows:

  • Basic Membership: $0.50 per transaction
  • ParkmobilePro Membership: $0.45 per transaction
  • Corporate Membership: $0.45 per transaction

Parkmobile payments do not integrate with the meters in this area. While your payment will not show on the meter, the officer will use your license plate number and zone number to view your Parkmobile payment on a handheld device. As such, please make sure to add any additional license plate numbers to your account before creating a parking session in order to make sure your parking transactions are correctly created.

Zone numbers are a critical part of your transaction and must be recorded correctly in order for your parking session to be identified correctly by the parking enforcement officers. Zone numbers can vary by street, area, or meter. You MUST identify your Parkmobile zone number from the green Parkmobile signage located in your parking area to ensure you start your session correctly.

In the parking areas in Somerville, MA zone numbers range from 1401 to 14157.

If you choose to appeal your ticket by mail or online, there will be no further right of appeal unless you have additional evidence to produce within 10 days of the hearing decision. If you wish to speak to a hearing officer in person, please wait for a hearing notice to be generated. As long as you attend your hearing, you will not be responsible for any late fees incurred. Once you receive your hearing date, if you are not able to attend, please call 311 to reschedule.

To dispute a citation, follow the instructions on the ticket or go to parksomerville.io. You can log on to your Personal Pages online at parkmobile.io to obtain a receipt for your parking session.

Street Sweeping

About the Program

Our street cleaning program is essential to keep the City clean and reduce the risk of flooding and icing from storm drain backup. After Somerville experienced flash flooding in 2010, this program became more important than ever.

Streets signs show the time and date when there’s no parking due to street sweeping. We use a pattern to help residents plan ahead. For example, the first and third Thursday of each month etc. Street sweeping season runs from April 1st to December 31st. You can see the street sweeping schedule for your neighborhood below. You can sign up below to receive email or text reminders about your neighborhood.
