SustainaVille Week is an annual celebration of sustainability and climate action in Somerville. This year’s lineup features fun and educational activities and events for the whole family. Check out the full schedule of events below.

SustainaVille Week Events 2026
Block Party on Mossland St │ May 2nd, 1:00-4:00 (Mossland St): Join the City of Somerville at a block party on Mossland Street to kick off SustainaVille week! We will have opportunities to learn, play and eat with Somerville City Departments, commissions, and local organizations. As a part of this event, the City’s Mobility Division will share updates on the Elm-Beacon Connector project including a demonstration of the future Neighborway plan for Mossland Street.
Energy Efficiency Home Tours │ May 3rd, 1:00-4:00 (Click here for locations, click here for an interactive map): Interested in seeing energy efficiency retrofits in Somerville? Thinking about starting the decarbonization journey yourself? Come through several open houses, speak to homeowners, and professionals to learn from your neighbors! In collaboration with Mothers Out Front.
Sustainaville Book Club │ May 4th, 6:15-7:30 (West Branch Library): Sustainaville Book Club builds and strengthens relationships with residents and community-based organizations through a shared love of reading. Join us for our first ever Book Club to meet OSE staff and other sustainably minded residents, while discussing “Climate Action for Busy People” by Cate Mingoya-LaFortune, and join in a discussion with the author.
Compost Give Away │ May 5th, 1:00-5:00 (5 Palmer Ave): The City of Somerville will be distributing finished compost free of charge to Somerville residents on May 5th, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., at Glen Park Community Garden, 5 Palmer Ave. The rain date is May 12th at same time and location. The finished compost was processed by Garbage to Garden, the City’s contractor for the curbside food waste collection pilot program in East Somerville. To receive finished compost, residents must bring their own containers to the event. Information about signing up for the City of Somerville’s free curbside food waste collection pilot program in East Somerville will also be available at this event.
Energy Efficiency Tour of the Kennedy School │ May 7th, 4:00-6:00 (5 Cherry St): Come take a tour of the Kennedy School and see the energy efficiency upgrades from summer 2025 including new chillers, pumps, and controls.
Arbor Day Picnic in the Park │ May 8th, 3:00-6:00 (290 Washington St): Join Somerville’s Public Space and Urban Forestry Division, Office of Sustainability and Environment, and local environmental organizations to celebrate the end of SustainaVille Week! This family-friendly event will have tree planting, climate carnival games, refreshments, and information on what’s happening in the community. Bring a blanket and join the fun!

Earth Day: Our Power, Our Planet │ April 26th, 1:00-3:00 (22 Vinal Ave, Somerville): Come share your knowledge, learn from each other, and meet area advocates. Connect in common space and grow your power! Earth Day 2026 is a call for collective action to reclaim rights and futures, focusing on empowering people to drive environmental change, advance clean energy, and protect communities from pollution and climate impacts. The event will include storytelling and hands-on garden and craft activities, partnering with Wildlife Arts.
RE New / Recycled Art Locavore Show │ April 25th to May 17th (62A Summer St): Part of Somerville Open Studios, RE NEW: Recycled Art Show, is an SOS Locavore exhibition celebrating transformation, sustainability, and creative reinvention. This show explores how discarded and repurposed materials can be reimagined into compelling sculptural forms and textures that speak to environmental awareness and artistic innovation.
