Somerville Young Tree Training Program 2022

In an effort to promote the health of the existing trees in the City of Somerville, the City has commenced a Young Tree Training Program (YTTP). This program focuses on pruning all of the young trees in the City on a three-year cycle. The first year of this program was completed in 2020. This YTTP contract focuses on pruning approximately one-third of the City’s approximately 2,500 young trees each year.

Why is this program important?

  1. The Pruning of trees at early stages will encourage their proper structure and growth habit.
  2.  The facilitates the removal of objectionable limbs that threaten future health of trees and the safety of the public.
  3. Is easier and less costly to complete tree maintenance from now and it lowers the likelihood the tree will have catastrophic branch failure in the future.
