Somerville Young Tree Training Program 2021
In an effort to promote the health of the existing trees in the City of Somerville, the City has commenced a Young Tree Training Program (YTTP). This program focuses on pruning all of the young trees in the City on a three-year cycle. The first year of this program was completed in 2020. This YTTP contract focuses on pruning approximately one-third of the City’s approximately 2,500 young trees each year.
Why Is This Program Important?
- The pruning of trees at early stages will encourage proper structure and growth habits.
- This pruning removes limbs that threaten future health of trees and the safety of the public.
- It is easier and less costly to complete tree maintenance on young trees, and it lowers the likelihood the tree will have catastrophic branch failure in the future.
