Call for Artists: $50K Mural Opportunity in Union Square
A highly visible new canvas is coming to the heart of Union Square—and the City is looking for an artist to define it.
The Somerville Arts Council is seeking a muralist or artist team to create a large-scale public artwork on the exterior of the expanded Prospect Street Substation Building, directly across from the Union Square Green Line Station.
Set at one of the busiest corners of the neighborhood, the project offers a rare opportunity to shape a new visual landmark in a neighborhood defined by movement, creativity, and community. The project is in partnership with and funded by Eversource.
Project Details:
- Budget: $50,000, funded by Eversource
- Location: Union Square, Somerville
- Application Deadline: April 15, 2026, at 11:59 p.m.
This is a Request for Qualifications (RFQ). Artists are invited to submit examples of past work and an overview of their artistic practice. A site-specific proposal is not required at this stage.
Submissions are open to individual artists, artist teams, and nonprofit organizations, with a focus on those experienced in murals or public art.
