Help Shape a Safer Community Path: All Invited to Take City Survey & Share Ideas on Interactive Map

Since its opening in 2023, the Community Path Extension has become a critical route in Somerville for those walking, rolling, and wheeling, with a daily average of 3,300 pedestrians in 2024 (as counted at Cedar Street). Now the City wants to hear from you about how to make the path safer for all.  

The City has launched a community engagement process to inform its work to improve safety for all users on the path. The project will include both short-term improvements and longer-term design options along the path, at key intersections, and at the two Green Line station entrances on the path. 

Mayor Ballantyne and the City’s Mobility division invite community members to give feedback in multiple ways: 

• Take the online survey (open until Tuesday, October 21)
• Review and add comments to the Public Input Map (open until Tuesday, October 21)
• Chat with City staff at a pop-up event along the path:
  • Saturday, September 27: Lowell St., 11 a.m. to noon
  • Thursday, October 2: East Somerville MBTA station, 8 to 9:30 a.m.

After reviewing all the input gathered, the project team will aim to publish a set of safety improvement strategies in early 2026 with the goal to start quick-build implementations in the spring/summer of 2026.
