Join the Somerville Board of Elections Commissioners

The City of Somerville is seeking a new member to join the Somerville Board of Elections Commissioners. This vacancy is for a registered Republican. The Board consists of four people who represent each of the two leading political parties (Democrats and Republicans), as defined in Chapter 50, Section 1 of the Massachusetts General Laws. 

What is the Somerville Board of Elections Commissioners? 

The Board of Elections Commissioners supports all functions of the Elections Department and assumes nearly all responsibilities relating to primaries and elections in Somerville. Commissioners supervise all official elections and recounts, assist in testing voting equipment, and oversee the accurate tabulation of all voting machine results at the end of each election night. They also attend occasional meetings as needed.  

Who Can Join? 

Eligible applicants for the current vacancy must be registered to vote in Somerville and a registered Republican. Applicants cannot be a member of any other Somerville board or commission. 

What is the Time Commitment? 

Commissioners serve three-year terms and earn a monthly stipend of $318. 

What is the Appointment Process? 

Members are appointed by the Mayor and confirmed by the City Council.
