Join the Somerville Climate Action Commission

Are you passionate about working locally to address the climate crisis, strengthen community resilience, and help Somerville adapt to climate change? The City is seeking up to 13 volunteer members to join the Somerville Climate Action Commission (CAC). Membership is open to all residents and those who do business in Somerville.

What is the Climate Action Commission?

The CAC’s goal is to advance environmental justice for current and future Somerville residents by creating a healthier, safer, and more resilient community. Commissioners will engage the public, give voice to community concerns and opportunities, and advance projects that complement and iterate on the City’s Climate Forward priorities and actions. The purpose and duties of the Climate Action Commission are ordained in Ordinance No. 2025-04.

The CAC is the re-envisioned version of the Somerville Commission on Energy Use and Climate Change (CEUCC), a standing resident commission since 2001.

Who can join?

All Somerville residents and business owners are eligible to apply. The makeup of the CAC will prioritize representation of the diversity of Somerville, including youth, seniors, renters, those who live in different neighborhoods, and those who do business in Somerville.

Applicants should have knowledge of or interest in climate change, including topics such as social resiliency, infrastructure resiliency, community health, equity, buildings, natural resources, waste, municipal and school operations, transportation, mobility, public engagement, environment, policy, climate science, public finance, workforce development, biodiversity, nature-based solutions, urban agriculture, or urban forestry.

What is the time commitment?

The CAC holds hybrid meetings on the second Tuesday of each month from 7 to 8:30 p.m. In addition to monthly meetings, CAC members participate in occasional subcommittee activities, public outreach, and engagement events. Incoming members in this recruitment round will be appointed to a one-, two-, or three-year term.

What is the deadline to apply?

Applications must be received by end of day (4:30 p.m.) on April 3, 2026, to be considered for review in early April. Applications received after that date may be reviewed on a rolling basis if positions remain unfilled after the initial application period.

What is the appointment process?

Applications will be reviewed in early April. The Mayor then makes appointments, which must be confirmed by the City Council. New members are onboarded and sworn in by the City Clerk before beginning service.
