Join Somerville’s Black History Month Celebration

Monthlong series of events includes conversation with U.S. Rep. Ayanna Pressley, wellness workshop, and film screenings

To honor Black History Month, the City of Somerville is hosting free public programming throughout February designed to create space for reflection, learning, and community – including a wellness workshop, film screening, and a fireside chat with Somerville’s U.S. Representative Ayanna Pressley. Programming is led by Somerville’s Department of Racial and Social Justice, in partnership with local partners.  

Black History Month Events 

  • Wellness Workshop (Capacity Limited- Registration Required)
    • Date: Thursday, February 12, 5 - 7 p.m.
    • Place: Tufts Administration Building Atrium, (167 Holland St)
    • About: Led by Monia of Monarch Wellness, the wellness workshop will explore practices that support mental, physical, and emotional health led by Monia Fernandez of Monarch Wellness. Attendees should be prepared for light physical activity as well as healthy conversations, light refreshments, and breathwork.

  • Lessons from the Past: Civil Rights Movement Then & Now
    • Date: Wednesday, February 18, 6 - 8 p.m.
    • Place: Chase Center, Tufts University (200 Packard Ave, Medford)
    • About: Lessons from the Past will focus on how we can apply the lessons and power of the Civil Rights Movement to the current fight for civil rights that is happening across the nation. Light refreshments will be served before the discussion. Click to register.
       
  • Black History Month Film Screenings
    • Date: Thursday, February 19 10:30 a.m. - 6:30 p.m.
    • Place: The Armory Performance Hall (191 Highland Ave.)
    • Film Screenings:
      • All-ages film: Soul | 10:30 a.m.- 12:30 p.m.
      • Young adult film: The Hate U Give| 1:30 - 3:30 p.m.
      • Film for Adults To be Announced: 4 - 6:30 p.m.
      • About: Featured screenings throughout the day will highlight Black voices, histories, and experiences. Following each screening there will be an opportunity for continued engagement with arts and crafts and small group discussion. Click to register
         
  • Black Youth Excellence Brunch (Open to youth and young adults)
    • Date: Saturday, February 21,  12 – 3 p.m.
    • Place: The Dojo at Somernova (15 Properzi Way)
