Join Sustainability-Focused Community Design Workshop for New School Building at 115 Sycamore, April 13

Collaborate with the City’s design team on plans to make our next new school building a healthy, low-carbon, and environmentally friendly space

As part of the design process for the new school building at 115 Sycamore Street, all community members are invited to join a collaborative workshop focused on sustainability on Monday, April 13, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the East Somerville Community School.

Project architects, Perkins Eastman, along with City staff, will share school project goals as well as opportunities to incorporate the City’s climate goals into the design. Community members will then be invited to discuss and provide their perspectives and ideas.

Examples of topics covered will include energy-efficiency, outdoor play and gardens, healthy learning spaces, building materials including embodied carbon (greenhouse gas emissions over the lifetime of the building), and more. No familiarity or prior experience with these topics is needed to participate.

The feedback gathered will be used by the City’s project team and architects to help inform preliminary design efforts and work moving forward.

When and Where:

  • Time and Date: Monday, April 13, 2026, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
  • Location: East Somerville Community School, 50 Cross Street

More About the Project

Somerville is building a new school at 115 Sycamore Street and working with the Massachusetts School Building Authority to access state funding to help cover the cost. This new school building will meet a range of Somerville School District needs. Various design options for how to configure quality learning environments within a larger structure are being explored.
