Mayor Ballantyne Invites Residents to Join the Community Preservation Committee


The City of Somerville is seeking one volunteer member to join the Somerville Community Preservation Committee (CPC). This vacancy is for someone passionate about affordable housing, history, open space, and accessibility with an interest in helping guide community investment. 

What is the Community Preservation Committee? 

The CPC identifies spending priorities for approximately $7 million per year for affordable housing, historic preservation, and open space projects through Community Preservation Act (CPA) funds. 

Who Can Join? 

All Somerville residents are invited to apply. 

What is the Time Commitment? 

The position will have a three-year term running from January 1, 2026 through December 31, 2028. The member will have the option to renew for one additional three-year term. The CPC typically meets once per month on the fourth Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. 

What is the Appointment Process? 

The committee consists of nine people. Four volunteer members from the general public are appointed by the Mayor and approved by City Council. Four volunteer members are appointed by the Planning Board, the Conservation Commission, the Historical Preservation Commission, and the Housing Authority.

Please note that the names and qualifications of finalist candidates will be posted on the City website for public review for at least 3 weeks, beginning in September. All community members are invited to provide feedback on candidates during this time.
