Mayor Wilson Statement on 5/14 Davis Square Incident

The Somerville Police are actively investigating an assault with a knife-like weapon that occurred this morning on Holland Street between persons believed to be known to one another. Fortunately, the victim’s injuries were non-life-threatening, and first and foremost my thoughts are with them and wishes for their full recovery. 

I am extremely upset for the victim and the community. Our public spaces have to be safe and welcoming for everyone. We know residents are frustrated and concerned, and rightly so. We launched new interventions, protocols, and increased patrol efforts this spring, and we are fully committed to making sure people start to feel a noticeable impact of these efforts this summer and beyond. 

I want to thank Somerville Police Chief Benford and all of our emergency responders for their quick response and ongoing investigation. Public safety is the topmost responsibility of local government, and we’re going to keep showing up and doing the work.
