Somerville’s First Flag Raising Celebration Going Virtual in 2021

This year, instead of gathering on Prospect Hill on New Year’s Day to reenact the raising of the Grand Union Flag (considered to be the first flag of the nation), you can tune in to a virtual celebration of this historical event. Beginning Friday, January 1, a pre-recorded ceremony will air on City Cable (RCN channel 13 and Comcast channel 22) and the City’s YouTube channel here https://www.youtube.com/SomervilleCityTV. The broadcast will include many of the usual historical figures from prior programs, plus some new and engaging youth! To make it feel, however, as more of a community gathering, we’re encouraging all to mark their calendars and watch it together at the usual time, noon on Friday.

If you’re not able to watch it at noon on New Year’s Day, know that the program will also be available afterwards on the video section of the Historic Preservation Commission’s website www.somervillema.gov/departments/ospcd/historic-events-and-education  As they would have said in Colonial times “Huzzah Somerville!”

Individuals with disabilities who need auxiliary aids and services for effective communication (i.e., CART, ASL), written materials in alternative formats, or reasonable modifications in policies and procedures in order to access the programs and activities of the City of Somerville or to attend meetings should contact Nency Salamoun in advance at 617-625-6600 x2323 or NSalamoun@somervillema.gov.
