Somerville to Celebrate 30 Years of the Mystic Ave. Mural
Ribbon-cutting ceremony 10/27 at 3 p.m. to celebrate latest panel installation
If you’ve ever traveled down Mystic Avenue, you’ve seen the Mystic Mural—a 30-year, revolving display of youth creativity and ode to local environment.
To celebrate the latest installation, Somerville Arts and Culture (SAC) invites community members to a ribbon cutting ceremony on Tuesday, October 27, at 3 p.m. on the corner of Temple St. and Mystic Ave.
Initiated in 1996 by former SAC Director, Cecily Miller, the Mystic Mural Program creates a space where students from all backgrounds can create, learn, and contribute to the vibrancy of their community.
Each summer, students work alongside professional muralist David Fichter, environmental educators, naturalists, and local historians from the surrounding community to develop curriculum centered on an adventurous exploration of the Mystic River Watershed. Through this exploration themes emerge to inspire new panels, creating one of the largest and longstanding murals in the Boston area.
During the ceremony attendees will view the 2026 mural and hear from Mayor Wilson and David Fichter. Reception to follow at the Mystic Activity Center (530 Mystic Ave.).
