Somerville to Celebrate Brazilian Independence with Flag Raising at City Hall
Community invited to celebration on Thursday, September 10 with free refreshments
The Somerville Office of Immigrant Affairs (SOIA), in proud partnership with the Brazilian Women’s Group, invites community members to celebrate 204 years of Brazilian independence at the fourth annual Brazilian flag raising on Thursday, September 10, at 3 p.m. on the Somerville City Hall concourse (93 Highland Ave). The rain date is Monday, September 14.
“Somerville’s Brazilian community has helped shape our city through its culture, leadership, local businesses, and deep commitment to community,” said Mayor Jake Wilson. “I’m proud to join the Brazilian Women’s Group and neighbors from across Somerville in celebrating Brazil’s independence and recognizing the many contributions of our Brazilian community.”
The event will feature remarks from Mayor Jake Wilson, the Consulate General of Brazil in Boston, representatives of the Brazilian Women’s Group, and SOIA staff. Attendees will enjoy live music and performances of the national anthems of Brazil and the United States, followed by the ceremonial raising of the Brazilian flag. Light refreshments and resources from local Brazilian organizations will also be available.
“We are so grateful that in Somerville, the chosen home of so many Brazilians, we are able to celebrate our Brazilian roots, history and culture,” said Rafael Peruzzo, Portuguese Services Coordinator for SOIA. “We look forward to sharing some delicious ‘pão de queijo’ (baked cheese rolls) and ‘brigadeiro’ (chocolate sweet), staples of Brazilian cuisine.”
