Somerville Hosting Annual 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony

The City of Somerville’s Veterans’ Services department invites community members to a 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony on Friday, September 11, at 6 p.m. in Davis Square to mark the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks and honor all victims as well as first responders, workers, and volunteers who rushed to the scene to save lives or to later help carry out the dangerous cleanup. 

“On this solemn day we remember the lives lost, honor the bravery of first responders, and offer support to their families and communities as we continue to heal as a country from the trauma of that day,” said Mayor Jake Wilson. “Unity is our strength, so may we also honor their memory by continuing to look out for each other.” 

The observance will feature a moment of silence, invocation and benediction by Father Paul Coughlin, as well as remarks by Mayor Wilson and Veterans Director Jerome Thomas. A bagpipe tribute will follow, and attendees will be given individual roses to place on the 9/11 Memorial. The ceremony will include a presentation of and retiring of the colors (national, state, and unit flags) by the Honor Guards of the Somerville Police and Somerville Fire Department. 

“As we reflect on the 25th anniversary of the tragic events of September 11, 2001, we owe it to those we lost on that day to remember not only the horror we experienced as a nation, but also the compassion, unity, and sense of community that followed. It truly reflected the best of the American spirit,” said Ward 4 Councilor Jesse Clingan.
