Transformative stormwater management project aims to bring flood relief and improved water quality
Mayor Katjana Ballantyne, Ward 4 Councilor Jesse Clingan, and City staff invite you to a virtual community meeting to learn more about flood relief and water quality improvement efforts planned for Winter Hill, Ten Hills, and the surrounding neighborhood.
When: Wednesday, November 12, from 6 to 8 p.m. (NOTE: The meeting date has been updated from its original date of October 29)
Where: Virtual meeting held via Zoom. Visit somervillema.gov/mysticoutfall to attend.
Since early 2024, City staff and consulting partners have been performing field investigations, coordinating with state and federal partners, gathering feedback from residents, and advancing design. During the meeting the project team will present the updated design and provide an opportunity for residents to ask questions and share their feedback.
Following the meeting, a recording of the presentation and information about the current design will also be available on the project website at somervillema.gov/mysticoutfall.
Future opportunities for community members to share feedback include virtual office hours with city staff (times and dates to come), on-street outreach, event tabling, and more. Information on how to participate will be posted to somervillema.gov/mysticoutfall.
For questions, please email construction@somervillema.gov or call 311 (617-666-3311 from outside of Somerville).
More About This Project
The City of Somerville is making substantial systemwide investments to modernize its sewer and stormwater infrastructure. As part of this effort, the City will be rehabilitating and improving the utilities in Winter Hill, Ten Hills, and the neighborhood west of Foss Park. To support stormwater management in this area and beyond, the City is installing new drainage infrastructure and constructing a new stormwater outfall pipe that will discharge to the Mystic River. This project will reduce flood risk in the surrounding area and help maintain the water quality of local rivers.
This project is one of a series of actions the City is undertaking to reduce water pollution, address flooding, and modernize Somerville’s infrastructure.
Final design is currently anticipated to be completed during 2026. Construction will follow design and is expected to begin in 2027.
