Stay Cool and Safe: Heat Advisory for Somerville in Effect July 15 to 17

At this time, the National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory for Tuesday, July 15 through Thursday, July 17. High heat and humidity are expected with feels-like temperatures up to 100 degrees. It’s important to know how to keep yourself and loved ones cool and safe on high heat days. The expected weather conditions can cause heat illness if precautions are not taken. 

 Tips for Heat Safety: 

• Never leave children or pets alone in a car or other vehicle, even for a quick errand and even if the windows are open. 
• Reduce time spent in direct sun and limit outdoor activity to the morning and evening hours. Avoid strenuous activity during the hottest part of the day, which is typically 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. 
• Drink plenty of water. Avoid alcohol and caffeinated or very sugary drinks.  

Seek Relief in an Air-conditioned City Building: 

• Anyone is welcome to visit the Somerville Public Libraries during their regular hours. For hours and locations, visit somervillepubliclibrary.org.
• Seniors are welcome to visit Council on Aging Senior Centers on weekdays. For locations, hours, and activity information, visit somervillema.gov/coa. 

Visit a Pool or Outdoor Water Feature: 

• Dilboy Pool and Latta Brothers Memorial Pool at Foss Park are open daily. For more information on Somerville and area pools, visit somervillema.gov/pools.
• Many Somerville city parks have water features that run from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Water sprays are on timers and stop for 20 minutes between cycles. See a map of water features at somervillema.gov/keepcool.
