SOMERVILLE -- Come this September, the Somerville Police Department will be increasing its presence in the schools, but nobody is in trouble-and the City's new STEPS initiative aims to keep it that way.

As part of ongoing work on McGrath Highway, MassDOT contractors will begin construction next week on Washington St. at the intersection with McGrath Highway that will change traffic patterns in the area.

Beginning on Tuesday, Sept., 8, traffic traveling east on Washington St. toward Sullivan Sq. will be reduced from five lanes to three, as follows:

Technicians from National Grid will be surveying the area in the coming days to inspect regulators on all natural gas meters to ensure they are working properly. As a result of the inspections, some equipment may need to be replaced, causing a temporary disruption to gas service. Please be assured National Grid's system is operating safely. PRELIMINARY CITY ELECTION ON SEPT. 17

Only Ward 6 residents will be voting in preliminary election

SOMERVILLE -The 2015 Preliminary City Election will be held on Thursday, Sept. 17, and only residents in Ward 6 will be casting ballots that day.
