Temporary Elections Support Workers
The City of Somerville seeks six (6) Temporary Elections Support Workers for the City of Somerville Elections Department. The Elections Support Workers will assist the Elections Department in the processing of confidential information in addition to work as assigned.
Employment Period: July 15, 2020 through November 30, 2020
Schedule: 40 hours/week; Monday-Wednesday, 8:30am-4:30pm \ Thursday, 8:30am-7:30pm \ Friday, 8:30am-12:30pm
Pay: $18.00/hour. Not benefit eligible.
Essential Functions
- Opening and sorting of incoming correspondence
- Data entry
- Ability to sort and file by specific locations
- Prepare confidential and sensitive mailings
- Work independently or in a team in the same area
Recommended Minimum Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED
- Work accuracy and attention to detail is essential
- Good at taking direction and instruction
- Ability to bend and lift up to 52lbs
- Ability to train and learn new skills
- Willingness to be trained on Massachusetts Elections Computer System
Required Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills
Knowledge: Working knowledge or ability to develop knowledge of the functions of the Elections Department, including management of census records and voter counts.
Abilities: Ability to accurately sort and alphabetize documents; ability to operate a personal computer and enter data through typing; ability to handle confidential information.
Skills: Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, or any other standard office software to demonstrate skillset to enter information into an electronic database; experience filing documents and maintaining records in an office environment preferred.
Work Environment
The work environment involves everyday discomforts typical of indoor environments such as office settings, with infrequent exposure to outside elements. Noise or physical surroundings may be distracting, but conditions are generally not unpleasant. Must comply with applicable state and local safety precautions, including wearing personal protective equipment and practicing appropriate social distancing.

Physical Skills
Some physical demands are required to perform the work. Work effort principally involves sitting to perform work tasks, with intermittent periods of stooping, walking, and standing. There may also be some occasional lifting, pushing and pulling of objects such as voting machines, books, office equipment and computer paper (up to 52 lbs.)
Motor Skills
Duties are largely mental rather than physical, but the job requires minimal motor skills for activities such as moving objects, operating a telephone system, computer and/or most other office equipment, typing and/or word processing, filing, and sorting.
Visual Skills
Visual demands include clarity of vision, three-dimensional vision, precise hand-eye coordination, and ability to identify and distinguish colors. Employee will also require visual skills to constantly read documents for general understanding and analytical purposes.
