The Somerville Public Library will host a monthly income inequality reading group. The book to be discussed is Matt Taibbi’s Griftopia: Bubble Machines, Vampire Squids, and the Long Con That Is Breaking America.
A longtime contributor to Rolling Stone, Taibbi is known for his brash, pull-no- punches takes on American society and politics. Our hopes are for a lively and spirited discussion.
Real wages for most Americans have stagnated 35 years, with devastating consequences for their futures and those of their children. According to a 2014 Federal Reserve survey, 47% of Americans would find it difficult to get $400 to meet emergency expenses. Meanwhile, the incomes and assets of the wealthiest Americans have risen astronomically. Income inequality has become a problem so serious it’s become one of the most-talked about issues of the presidential election.
Further reading group books: Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the American City, Hand to Mouth: Living in Bootstrap America, and What Then Must We Do?: Straight Talk about the Next American Revolution.
This book group is hosted in partnership with the Community Action Agency of Somerville.
